Why is the view from Savitri Temple so special?
Pushkar is a town you understand from above. From the hilltop you see the whole shape of it at once: the lake ringed by its ghats, the white and blue rooftops of the old town pressed around it, the Brahma Temple's red spire, and then — abruptly — the sand beginning where the streets end. No other point around Pushkar gives you all of that in a single look.
Sunrise is when it earns its reputation. The air is cool and clear before the day's haze builds, the first light comes across the Aravallis and catches the lake while the town below is still quiet, and you can watch Pushkar wake up ghat by ghat. By late morning the light flattens and the heat sits on the hill; if you can't do dawn, aim for the last hours before sunset instead.
Should you climb the steps or take the ropeway?
Both are good, for different people and different hours. The stepped path is the old pilgrim way — steep, uneven in stretches, and almost entirely without shade, taking around TODO-VERIFY minutes up at a steady pace. Done at dawn in cool air, it's a lovely walk with the view improving at every turn. Done at midday in warm months, it's a slog we wouldn't wish on anyone.

Who is Savitri, and why is her temple up here?
The temple is dedicated to Savitri Mata, Brahma's consort — and her hilltop seat is part of the same story that explains the Brahma Temple down in the town. The traditional telling involves Brahma's great yagna at Pushkar Lake and what happened when Savitri arrived to it; like most Pushkar legends it has several versions, and it lands far better told on the hill itself, looking down at the very lake where it is set, than summarised in a paragraph. What about the monkeys?
There are plenty of them on the hill and around the temple, and they are bolder than the ones in town. Keep food, snacks and anything crinkly out of sight in a closed bag, hold on to sunglasses, caps and phones — dangling items are what they grab — and don't feed them, however photogenic they look. Give them room and they'll give you the same; they're part of the hill's character, not a reason to skip it.
